The Consequences of a Simpler Simulation: Are Our Creators Less Impressive Than We Think?

But what if our simulators aren't as enlightened as we imagine? Physicist Eric Weinstein adds another layer to this: instead of waiting for artificial general intelligence (AGI), we might actually be waiting for human general intelligence. Our simulators might not even be aware of us, just as we aren’t fully aware of every detail in the simulations we create. This makes our simulators less impressive—not gods, but engineers working with the basic principles of complexity, setting things in motion and stepping back.

Human intelligence is often romanticized as something unique—a product of consciousness, free will, or a “magical spark.” However, as AI advances, it’s becoming clearer that intelligence might just be an added layer of complexity. If intelligence is merely the result of layering more complexity into a system, then it’s possible that our simulators didn’t need to be particularly enlightened. In The Entropy Code, the “Gods” are not omnipotent deities but overworked interns, scrambling to create the next big hit song by manipulating simulations of intelligent life. Their actions aren't driven by a higher purpose—they’re simply doing their job. This ties directly into the Copy-Paste Fallacy: simulators don’t need to program every detail from scratch. They only need to create the basic self-organizing principles that allow complexity to emerge.

By portraying the simulators in The Entropy Code as interns rather than enlightened beings, we underscore the idea that intelligence—whether human or artificial—is not some mystical force, but the result of complex systems running their course. In the end, our simulators, like us, might just be filling in the blanks.
